Tuesday, October 18th

I hope everyone had a GREAT Fall Break! I forgot to send out the spelling list yesterday so we will just start that up next week. I will be sending home some sight word lists this week in your student OWL binders.

Reading: This week our unit of study is focused on nocturnal animals. All of our reading this week will revolve around this unit. The following is our shared reading for the week:
Five nocturnal animals.
Sitting by the door.
The firefly flashed around.
And then there were four.

Four nocturnal animals.
Sitting by the tree.
Beaver left because of bat.
Then there were three.

Three nocturnal animals.
Sat on tractor new.
Bat hung upside down.
Then there were two.

Two nocturnal animals.
Looking for some fun.
Hungry owl caught both mice.
Then there was one.

One nocturnal animal.
Watching for the sun.
Raccoon left before it rose.
    Then there was none.

Along with the nocturnal animals theme we are also comparing and contrasting fiction and nonfiction text. This is something very simple to keep in mind when reading with your student at home. Discuss the genre of the book they are reading and ask them how they know! Please know that it is very, very important for students to read nonfiction text. Try to keep a supply of child-friendly magazines or articles around for your student to read.

This week we continue or study of syllables and breaking up and chunking words. I am so impressed with the student's abilities to break up a word into a syllables!

Math: Last week we finished our subtraction unit. I will be sending home the graded tests at the end of this week. One concept that I noticed many of the kids struggling with was fact families. We are taking just a bit of time this week to review the relationship between addition and subtraction. We have completed numerous activities using manipulatives this week to help us better understand fact families. Today students worked in pairs with a set of dice to create fact families. Please be on the lookout for homework this week. If the students do not finish their work in class they are expected to finish at home!
